Bathrooms and kitchens are the two rooms where shutter material genuinely matters. Everywhere else in the house it is mostly a question of looks and budget. In a room that fills with steam twice a day, it decides how the shutter looks in five years.
What moisture actually does
Repeated damp and heat is hard on natural timber. It swells slightly as it takes on moisture and shrinks again as it dries, and over enough cycles that movement can show up as louvres that no longer sit evenly, or a finish that lifts at the edges. It is slow and it is not dramatic — but it is the reason we steer people away from our timber ranges in a wet room.
The two we recommend
- Classic — a composite shutter built for exactly this. It does not take on moisture the way timber does, so bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms are where it is happiest. It is also our most affordable collection, which makes it an easy choice for a small bathroom window.
- Endurance — a tougher, harder-wearing finish for rooms that are both damp and busy. A family bathroom that never really dries out, or a kitchen window right above the hob, is the case for Endurance over Classic.
What about the timber collections?
Linea, Signature and Heritage are lovely shutters and they go all over the rest of the house — bedrooms, living rooms, landings, period bay windows. We would not specify them for a shower room. If you have your heart set on the look of timber in a bathroom that is well ventilated and only used occasionally, talk to us first rather than ordering on spec.
One thing people forget
Think about the window itself, not just the room. A frosted bathroom window that never opens has a very different life to one directly above a bath. If the window gets splashed, treat it as a wet application even if the room feels dry.
