These two styles get compared more than any other, and for good reason: both are chosen by people who want daylight at the top of the window and privacy at the bottom. They go about it in completely different ways, and the right one usually comes down to one question — how often will you want to change your mind?
Café style, in short
A café style shutter covers only the lower part of the window. The top is left open and unframed, exactly as it is now. It is the simpler and more affordable of the two, and it suits a window where you always want the top half clear — a kitchen window over a sink, or a front room facing the street where you want light but not passers-by looking in.
The trade-off is that it is fixed. The uncovered top stays uncovered. If you ever want to close the whole window off, a café style shutter cannot do it.
Tier-on-tier, in short
Tier-on-tier covers the whole window, but splits it into two independent sets of panels, one above the other. Each tier opens, closes and tilts on its own. You can throw the bottom open while the top stays shut, close everything for the evening, or tilt both sets to angle the light.
It is the most flexible shutter we make. It is also the most involved: twice the panels, twice the hardware, and a higher price than a café style shutter on the same window.
How to choose
- Pick café style if the top of the window will always stay clear, and you like the lighter, less formal look.
- Pick tier-on-tier if you want the option to close the whole window, or if the room changes use through the day.
- Consider full height instead if you want whole-window cover but never need the two halves to work separately — it costs less than tier-on-tier and looks cleaner.
A note on tall windows
On a tall window, a full height shutter may need a mid rail across the panel for strength. Tier-on-tier already has a horizontal break built in where the two tiers meet, so if you dislike the idea of a rail landing in an awkward spot, tier-on-tier gives you control over where that line sits.
